How to ask for money as a wedding gift

Asking for money as a wedding gift is common in Spain and doesn't have to feel awkward. The easiest way is to explain it on the wedding website rather than on the invitation, in a warm tone and, if you can, saying what you will use it for. Give your bank details and, if you like, a specific fund such as the honeymoon.

Where to put it

On the invitation, one line pointing to the website is enough. On the website you have room to explain it properly, and you can change it without sending anything again.

How to word it

A natural, grateful tone works better than elaborate phrasing. Say that what matters most is that they come and then how they can help if they would like to give you something.

  • “The best gift is having you there. If you'd also like to help with our honeymoon, our bank details are below.”
  • “We already have everything we need for our home; if you'd like to give us something, we'd love it to go towards our trip.”

A specific goal helps

Contributing to something specific (the trip, a piece of furniture, an experience) feels more personal than a plain bank transfer. A fund with a target and the option to leave a message turns money into a gift with a name.

Bank transfer, Bizum or card

Bank transfers and Bizum (the Spanish instant payment app) cost nobody anything, but guests have to copy details. Paying by card is the easiest option for the giver; check first what fee the service you use charges.

Whichever way it comes, keep track of who gave you what: you will need it for the thank-yous.

And for those who prefer a present

There will always be guests who prefer to give something physical. A small list of gifts that can be reserved, alongside the money option, avoids duplicates.
