Wedding registry etiquette

Share your wedding registry from the invitation onwards, never before, and on the wedding website rather than printed on the card. It should have gifts at a range of prices, let guests reserve them to avoid duplicates and also offer the option of contributing money. Giving is always voluntary: the registry guides, it doesn't oblige.

When to share it

With the invitation or afterwards, but not before: sending the registry with the save-the-date tends to go down badly. On the invitation, just point to the website, where the registry has all the details.

What to include

  • Gifts at a range of prices, so everyone finds something.
  • Things you will actually use.
  • A fund for something big (the trip, a piece of furniture), where each person gives what they like.
  • Your bank details, for anyone who would rather make a transfer.

Avoiding duplicates

Letting guests mark a gift as reserved stops two people buying the same thing. If a gift can be given more than once (several towels, several glasses), say how many you would like.

Money is fine, said naturally

Asking for money is common and accepted in Spain. What works best is to say it naturally and, if you can, explain what you will use it for. See also the guide on how to ask for money as a wedding gift.

What to avoid

  • Setting a minimum or suggesting amounts per guest.
  • Reminding people who haven't given about the registry.
  • Suddenly swapping a reserved gift for something else.
